After breakfast we will be breaking up into groups. The service will start
at 9:00am and go until 12:00pm. The first 60 people will receive a FREE
T-shirt!

Make a difference in your community! Become a VISTA volunteer with the Campus-Community Outreach Project. A VISTA volunteer is needed to assist Utah Valley University's Volunteer & Service-Learning Center in developing sustainable partnerships with community organizations. This is a one-year national service position. VISTAs receive a modest living allowance ($890/month) and $4,725 in an educational award upon successful completion of service. The position will begin December 7th, 2009.
The VISTA volunteer working with the Campus-Community Outreach Project will strengthen UVU's capacity to address community needs in the following ways:
• Provide critical needs assessments of community agencies focusing on anti-poverty outcomes so each college can determine how best to help these agencies
• Enhance the ability of each institution to leverage campus resources to address community needs
• Expand civic engagement opportunities for students and faculty
• Increase awareness of community needs
• Work on institution-specific projects

REQUIREMENTS: College degree; strong interest and experience in college service programs; experience working with students and diverse groups of people; leadership ability; computer skills; public speaking skills; strong writing and organizational skills; ability to drive; ability to make a full-year commitment; ability to attend a week long training (December 7-10) outside of Utah.
BENEFITS: Health coverage, childcare assistance (if eligible), $4,725 education award upon successful completion of service, living allowance, relocation allowance, public transportation pass, paid vacation and sick days.

The Children's Educational Relief Foundation (CERF) has partnered with Utah Valley University Community and Continuing Education department and the UVU CERF Student Club to host a donation drive for relief supplies to aid Samoa and American Samoa. The drive will be held on Wednesday, October 7-Friday, October 9 at the following location and times:

UVU CE2 Building (Grey/blue house on west side of street)

Wednesday (Oct. 7) donations accepted from 11am-6pm
Thursday (Oct. 8) donations accepted from 9am-6pm
Friday (Oct. 9) donations accepted from 11am-4pm

Items will be sorted, packed and shipped by Saturday, October 10. All items collected during this drive, unless otherwise specified, will be donated directly to areas that are in the most need and will not be distributed by a third party group.

Break the Silence...
The Equity in Education Center at UVU is pleased to announce The Clothesline Project, a violence awareness and prevention program, being held on Thursday, October 1st and Friday, October 2nd, 2009, in the UVU Student Center Grande Ballroom from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Clothesline Project is a display of t-shirts created by survivors of violence, or created in honor of someone who has experienced violence, and hung on a clothesline for others to view. The Clothesline Project is a powerful witness of the violence many live with, and it provides a healing outlet for those who were forcibly silenced. Its goal is to raise awareness and stir the viewers to action in an effort to end the epidemic of violence. The Clothesline Project is free and open to the public; additionally, blank t-shirts will be available, free of charge, for anyone wanting to share their story.

We are in great need of volunteers on the days of the Clothesline Project to assist with set up (starting at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1st in the Grande Ballroom), to explain what the Clothesline Project is to those who view it, hang new t-shirts (if needed), take pictures of new shirts and type the words for our online Clothesline Project, and assist with take-down starting at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2nd.

CYCLISTS WANTED FOR TOUR DE HABITAT BIKE RIDE THIS SATURDAY! SAVE $5.00 BY REGISTERING ONLINE!
Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will be holding the first annual Tour de Habitat Bike Ride this Saturday, September 12th. The fun benefit ride will go throughout Utah County with stops at several Habitat homes, where you can see the homes, meet some of the Habitat families, and load up on snacks and drinks provided by Harmon's and other sponsors. There are three ride options: 13 miles, 30 miles and 60 miles. The ride begins at 8 a.m. at Harmon's on 800 East and 800 North in Orem. The entry fee is $15 for students and $20 for others if you pre-register online at www.habitatuc.org. It's an additional $5 if you register the day of the event. Among the goodies you'll receive is a pair of quality biking socks sponsored by Park's Sportsman. All proceeds go toward Habitat's local affordable housing efforts.

It is also a great resume builder, and you can feel good knowing you are helping someone achieve his/her goals of learning English. The ESL students have to meet with you for an hour every week. Once you have finished speaking English for an hour, you can switch into your partner’s language and practice speaking in that language, or meet to speak at another time during the week.

Volunteer Service in Capitol Reef National Park

September 26, 2009 (National Public Lands Day)

The NPCA is seeking up to 20 volunteers to help with Russian olive and tamarisk removal along the Fremont River corridor on September 26, 2009, National Public Lands Day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Capitol Reef National Park has been working for several years to control the exotic invasive species of Russian olive and tamarisk along the Fremont River and Highway 24 corridor within the park.

The project entails cutting Russian olive and tamarisk down to 6” – 12” high stumps. The stumps are then treated with herbicide. Large trees, and clumps of larger stems, will be cut by Park personnel using chainsaws. Smaller stems will be cut by the volunteers using hand tools (loppers and hand saws).

Branches and stems will be dragged short distances for either piling or chipping.
Volunteers will not have to apply herbicides; however, all volunteers will be working near where herbicide is being applied and will be able to smell the citrus-based oil with which the herbicide is mixed.

Some or all of the cut stems may be chipped. If that is the case, the Park will provide a chipper operator who will supervise any volunteers working around the chipper.

A safety overview and discussion will be conducted by Park personnel prior to commencing work. During the project all volunteers and Park staff are expected to maintain a high level of safety awareness for themselves and everyone working around them. Park staff will have first aid kits on-site, and will have radio communication with central dispatch.
The Park will provide all tools and equipment needed to perform the control work, including loppers, hand saws, and spray bottles.

If some of the volunteers are willing to assist with the herbicide application, rubber gloves will be provided for that task. Orange safety vests will be provided for work along roadsides. Hardhats and ear protection will be provided for any volunteers who assist the chainsaw or chipper operators.

Each volunteer is required to provide the following:
Sturdy work boots
Long work pants
Long-sleeve work shirt (recommended)
Leather work gloves
Eye protection (glasses, sunglasses, or safety goggles/glasses)
Sunscreen
Drinking water (minimum of 3 quarts)
Lunch/snacks

The Central Utah Center for Independent Living is a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities. This is their annual fundraiser. The race is on Saturday, June 27 in Provo. Volunteer in Zions National Park

Position: Green Team/ Recycling Volunteer
Location: Zion National Park, Springdale, UT
Time Commitment: 32-40 hours/week, June - September (flexible; 8-10 weeks)

Volunteers will assist Zion's Green Team efforts through various projects and assignments, helping the park to further reduce waste and energy use, and provide input to enable greater sustainability. Volunteers will assist staff members responsible for park recycling program by: Collecting recyclable materials from containers at various park locations, track and monitor recyclable materials on spreadsheet and forms, provide updates as needed, ect.

Volunteers will also gain valuable experience in green technology with new and ongoing solar power projects in Zion National Park by: Assist park staff with planning and logistics for five solar projects in Zion, research and gather information, obtain specifications, and work with contractors, may assist with installation, inspection, and maintenance of solar panel projects. Also volunteers will complete carious other projects and duties as assigned.

This means taking a physical inventory of every classroom (# desks/chairs, special equipment, etc.). The YMCA of Greater Salt Lake will be hosting its 11th annual Sports Night benefit for kids at the Salt Palace May 1st 2009. The YMCA will be honoring Utah's best athletes and former athletes including; Judge Tyrone Medley and former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards and others. The evening will include a Social Hour, Silent Auction, Dinner, Live auction and presentation of awards to the honorees.

To make this event a success we need several volunteers. Volunteers will be needed for event set up on May 1st from about 10am until 2pm as well as for the event itself. The event volunteers will be needed from 4:30pm to 9:30pm. (breaks will be provided)

Habitat for Humanity Benefit Show

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will be hosting a benefit show night with Comedy Sportz on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. at the Tahitian Noni Auditorium located at 5151 North 300 West, Provo. An Iraqi family has been accepted for resettlement in the US. They are coming to Utah the middle of March and are in need of some gently used furniture for their apartment. They have three children and will be living in a 2 bedroom apartment. Anything you may have to contribute will be greatly appreciated. "Bowls for Humanity" Fundraiser

Volunteers Needed for Expanding Your Horizons Conference

The Equity Center is excited to announce this years Expanding Your Horizons Conference for girls 6th thru 12th grade. This conference isdesigned to encourage and get girls excited about high-paying careers in Science and Technology. This years conference will be on March 7th 2009 in the Grande Ballroom at UVU. The Conference will run from 7 am until 12:30.

We will need Volunteersfrom 6 am until about 2:30.

Volunteers will help with the following:
-Set up

-Checking in participants

-Handing out snacks

-Show presenters to their rooms and helping them set-up

-Tech support (if familiar)

-Show participants to their rooms

-Give directions between workshops

-Set up interactive booths

-Hand out lunches

-Hand out t-shirts

-Clean-up

You don't need to stay for the entire conference; any time you can give is much appreciated. Our greatest need is early in the morning.

Volunteers have really enjoyed working at our conferences in the past and the day goes by so fast! Some advice is to wear comfy clothes and shoes (you don't need to dress up).

Nominations are now being accepted for Utah Campus Compact Statewide Recognition Event and the UVU Volunteer & Service-Learning Center Recognition & Appreciation Luncheon. The purpose of these events is to recognize the work of outstanding faculty, staff, students, on a statewide and institutional level who are excelling in civic engagement, service-learning, and volunteerism. Recipients of the awards will be honored at both events which are held in April.

Carter-Kellogg Scholarship presented by Stetson University

The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation, in coordination with Stetson University, announces the Carter-Kellogg Scholarship presented by Stetson University. Full-time college students who have completed or implemented service-learning projects are eligible to compete for $500 scholarships. To apply, students should describe their project activities and results, and a critical reflection on what they learned. Students must be able to articulate clearly the role that academics played in their project and the effects the project has had on the community. More specific guidelines and the online application can be found at www.servicebook.org. The deadline for this competition is rolling, with winners being selected monthly. To be included in the February competition, submissions must be completed by February 20.

YouthLINC-Volunteer Opportunity

On Wednesday December 10th we are serving as a service club at the Mckay Events Center at 4 thirty to raise money for children in Thailand. As a club we require 80 hours of service a year locally. This service at the Mckay will raise money for these children we want to help in Thailand and we had hopes that some of the mentors would be interested in helping us help these children. We currently need sixty people because that allows us to raise the amount of money needed for the children.

This could be a win-win situation because some of you may still need your service hours. We need to meet at the Mckay events Center at 4:30 dressed in a white shirt and black pants. The shirt has to be 3/4 sleeve or longer. Hair needs to be pulled back and please wear comfortable shoes. Please meet in the presidential south suite which is on the south end of the building on the third floor. Once again, this is a great cause and we hope that we can have your help in supporting it!
